Wall to Wall Comfort

haiti earthquakeAm I spoiled or what? How is it that my cozy ranch house is suddenly so appealing, so grand, so luxurious and so comfortable – when just a few weeks ago it so desperately needed a lift? How is it that my wardrobe is suddenly so complete and up-to-date when just the other day it was missing that little something?

Some relativity – and I'm cured. My home in relation to the Haitians' homes. My wardrobe in relation to the Haitians'. My pantry in relation to theirs. My comforts in relation to theirs – which are non-existent.

Therefore, I lack for nothing. I am a billionaire. My home is truly a castle. I am healthy and can easily obtain medical care, if necessary. I can run to the closest supermarket to pick up staples and extras. I need not contend with loiters and lawlessness. I am in good hands.

Of course, this is all relative. There is so much to complain about. Some politicians deserve a good spanking. Different body parts ail us – often daily. Our salaries – or is it unemployment benefits? – can use a raise. The children just don't listen! And many can moan the troubles of fumbling a diet and exercise schedule.

Now put all those complaints alongside the Haitian tragedy. Politicians? Government? Body parts? Children? What Haiti won't give for political stability and living, healthy citizens! Salary woes and diet maintenance seem insignificant against this backdrop.

As human beings we are builders, givers, creators and lovers. We move on. We contribute. We take stock and think about what current events can teach us. From our comfort zone back here, we are all billionaires. With four walls, a roof and sustenance – what can be better?
